System Center Essential: Windows Update

Hi Guys, this time we will configure the Microsoft Update Feature of System Center Essential
1. On the System Center Essential Overview page, we will Click Required: Configure Microsoft Update Setting.



2. Introduction Page . Click Next


3. First, we need to specify if our infrastructure has a proxy server. For this lab with no ISA Server, we will choose No. Click Synchronize.


4. The initial Synchronization will take some time. System Center Essential will hook to Microsoft Update and download the Catalog file that contains the list of recent updates from Microsoft.


5. Products Page. We will define all the products which are present on our Infrastructure that we wish to update using System Center Essential.


6. Update Language. Select the language. Click Next.


7. Classifications. Choose the classification of the updates you wish to download. For this lab, we will be downloading Critical Updates,  Security Updates and Service Packs for the Products from Step 5.


8. Configure Auto Approval settings. System Center Essential can also approved several updates automatically. If you enable this feature, you need to specify what are those updatesthat will approved automatically and to where these will be applied.


Now we have just configure the Microsoft Update feature of System Center Essential!

System Center Essential: Configure Computers and Devices

After installing System Center Essential, we will now configure the computers to be monitored and managed by System Center Essential.
1. On the Overview page of the System Center Essentials Console, we will click the Required: Configure computers and devices to manage.


2. On the Computer and Device Management Wizard, click Next

3. We will be utilizing the Advanced Discovery features of System Center Essential.

4. On the Discovery Method, one can Scan the Entire Active Directory by configuring the LDAP Query or Directly assign computers.

5. You need to specify the Administrator Account / Management Server Action Account which will be used for the installation of the Agents on those discovered machines.

6. On the Discovery Results page, you need to select those Machines you want to manage. This will automatically install the Agents using either the Administrator Account or Management Server Action Account defined on step no. 5.

7. A status dialog box will appear to see the status of the Agent installation. Once successful, you can now manage and monitor those machines.

Next, we will configure several features of System Center Essential: Gathering Inventory, Deploying Software, and doing Microsoft Updates.
